HABITUATION

THE PRINCIPLE OF habituation helps explain why movies get louder, more violent, and maybe even longer: We quickly habituate or become used to sensations, so, to produce the same level of arousal, we either need more of the same stimulus, or we need to repeat it more frequently. If there is not an increase in level or frequency, the original response is diminished, and sometimes we fail to respond at all.

The struggle to overcome habituation lies behind nearly every aspect of modern art, commerce, education, philosophy, and religion. It is manifested in that word that is ubiquitous in the modern world: “New.”
